Prevention of Violence Against Domestic Girl Workers |
 |
|
Given Phulki’s long experience of working with low income families, it was a natural progression for the organization to address the issue of domestic workers, particularly young girls. This segment of the population may be the most vulnerable, given their minimal levels of education, low salaries and low self esteems. There is no support system for these young girls, who often fall victim to sexual abuse and harassment by their employers and society at large.
Phulki’s innovative program is primarily aimed at developing a community level mechanism that will help develop best practices to reduce violence against domestic girl workers. For this purpose, Phulki is running three help centre for the girl domestic workers in three different types of areas like Korail slum, Paikepara Govt. colony and Rupnagar private residential area. |

Through these centres Phulki provides some skill training (Household works, hygiene training, sex education, cooking training, cutting & sewing training etc.) as well informal education to them that will make them confident worker and will help them to choose alternative income source in future. Beside these, Phulki has some sensitization workshops for the community people like employer of girl domestic workers, area committee members and guardians of girl domestic workers. Since its starting to work for the girl domestic workers in mid of 2006, Phulki have developed skill of 275 girl domestic workers. On the other hand, Phulki initiates to disseminate information regarding girl domestic workers through print media and electronic media. Currently, two articles were published in the “Daily Star” and “Daily Amardesh”, whereas, one article was wrote by a female employer. The objective of this dissemination is to change attitude of the society and build recognition of girl domestic workers through positive writing publication.
Community people's involvement in every step is the important spirit of this project. It is mentionable here that at present community people is financially contributing for the betterment of girl domestic workers.
